    • What is Screen

    Screen is a full-screen window manager that multiplexes a physical terminal between several processes (typically interactive shells). Each virtual terminal provides the functions of a DEC VT100 terminal and, in addition, several control functions from the ANSI X3.64 (ISO 6429) and ISO 2022 standards (e.g. insert/delete line and support for multiple character sets). There is a scrollback history buffer for each virtual terminal and a copy-and-paste mechanism that allows moving text regions between windows.

    Installation Information

    GNU Screen Subsystems

    fw_GNUscreen.sw.screen
    Contains the core Screen software; essential to run Screen.
    fw_GNUscreen.man.info
    Contains files for use with the GNU hypertext system. See "man info".
    fw_GNUscreen.man.manpages
    Contains preformatted, on-line pages for use with man(1).
    fw_GNUscreen.man.relnotes
    Contains these SGI release notes in html format; they can be read with an HTML viewer like xmosaic or netscape.
    fw_GNUscreen.man.docs
    Contains Gnuplot documentation. PostScript files can be read with a Postscript viewer like ghostview, ghostscript, or xpsview.
    fw_GNUscreen.src.screen
    Contains complete source code to GNU Screen 3.7.1 plus SGI additions.

    Installation Method

    All of the subsystems for this product can be installed using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to the Software Installation Administrator's Guide for complete installation instructions.

    Configuration

    Behavior of Screen can be customized by using a $HOME/.screenrc file. A sample file is installed in /usr/freeware/doc/screen/screenrc.sample. The Screen documentation explains the contents of this file; see the Documentation Information section below.

    Compatibility

    This software is compatible with IRIX 5.3 and IRIX 6.1.

    Documentation Information

    The Screen manual documents this package in detail. This manual is also available in GNU Info hypertext format; type "info -f /usr/freeware/info/screen.info" (see info(1) for more information).

    Additionally, the screen manual page can be read by typing "man screen".
